Community Liaison Program

From identifying resources to applying for participation, our Community Liaison Program is a portal connecting people to opportunities. The Greater Boston South Sudanese Community has changed a lot over the past 15 years, and being responsive to these changes is critical to our mission. Building on data collected in a recent survey of Boston-area South Sudanese, this program addresses specific needs and concerns shared by respondents. We have a staff member dedicated to making multiple site visits each week in order to find resources that best fit the needs identified by our survey.  Beyond researching these opportunities, our Community Liaison actively matches individuals and families with agencies, schools, and summer programs.

Housing Program

Here’s the challenge:  how do young families who work in the service industry or in entry and mid-level management balance the cost of housing in Greater Boston with a manageable commute to work? Some Sudanese want to buy or rent a home, but the cost can be prohibitive, and determining affordability is daunting. SSEF assists families in finding housing by navigating the confusion of affordable housing lists in surrounding communities and by connecting our families with other community-based housing resources.

Preschool Scholarship Program

Current best practices support the enrollment in early childhood education: it can launch children and their young parents on a path to future success from the start. SSEF is committed to connecting the families it serves with local preschools and early childhood resources, assisting with applications, and raising funds to make preschool more accessible. The positive influences of high-quality preschool are carried forward for a lifetime.

Summer Camp Program

Summer camp is more than fun in the sun—it’s an informal, immersive learning experience through which children build self-confidence, strengthen problem solving skills, cultivate curiosity, develop independence, discover new skills, and connect with nature. Each summer, for the past 15 years, SSEF has sent children, 8 years and older, to overnight camp. In 2017, 40 children went to camp through SSEF. We continue to expand our camp program and are looking into more options for upcoming summers, including day camp, partnerships with new overnight camps, and specialized summer programs for college-bound teens.

Saturday Bridges Program

Started in 2010, our Saturday Bridges Program brings together Sudanese children, parents, local students, volunteers, and professionals for enrichment programming during the academic year. We currently provide pre-literacy and early literacy support for our 2-4 year olds, outdoor experiential education for elementary and middle school students, one-on-one tutoring and mindfulness training for teens, and workshops for adults covering a range of topics, including financial literacy, housing, and various job search and life skills. Personalized tutoring is also available for adults. Participants and volunteers experience a rich cultural exchange, and beyond functioning as a social hub for the community, there are also opportunities to collaborate on creative projects such as memoir writing workshops and dance, art. and music presentations.

School Outreach Program

Anyone who hears the story of how the Boston-area South Sudanese Community arrived here is inspired. Building cross-cultural bridges of understanding by telling that refugee story and sharing aspects of Sudanese heritage has never been more important. The School Outreach Program brings this living story to students. We bring our curriculum to you, including a slideshow presentation and talk, readings, and videos.
